Make sure your horizon is horizontal! There's nothing worse than looking at a breathtaking shot with a horizon tilting to one side. Tripods with built-in levels are very handy for crucial shots.

Read your manual, maybe read it again and keep it handy. Get comfortable with your camera before that “special moment” arrives. Today’s cameras are too complex to “know it all”. Practice – practice – practice.
Research your destination. Less likelihood of missing them if you learn about photographic opportunities before you arrive.

Digital Photo Print Service - FotoDesk / GPC Labworks

Online Digital Photo Print Service - FotoDesk FAQ

What does FotoDesk service do for me?

FotoDesk provides a simple, reliable and automatic e-process for printing digital images on conventional Kodak colour paper.

FotoDesk links you directly to the GPC LabWorks’s digital photo-processing Lab!

Why has the software changed?

The software provider has discontinued the software. We have replaced it with a new version which is easier to use and will allow us to offer more services.

Is the new service safe?

Yes, the new service is a web based application with no software to install. There is only a cookie placed on your computer which includes your personal information for ordering and shipping purposes, where required.

Is my credit card information safe?

Yes, in fact, we don't process credit card transactions online because it is too expensive to do this. Credit card transactions are handled at our cash by authorized GPC LabWorks staff only. We do not store credit card information except at the customer's specific request. We never share or swap personal information. See:Privacy Policy

Where are the prices for 1 Day, Rush service??

After you have selected an image to print, the drop-down menu for order size and price will appear allowing you to select the service required.

How long does RUSH service take?

On RUSH service, generally prints can be ready same day with a few exceptions. Prints are always ready next day on RUSH service.

We only charge a small surcharge for RUSH prints.

What kind of Picture can I upload?

The FotoDesk application supports JPEG file format only.

What about other files formats?

As the FotoDesk application needs to be as small as possible to enable quick Internet download, each additional format would make the application bigger. If you have images which are saved in other formats, FotoDesk requires the image to be saved as a JPEG before sending it to us.

Please keep in mind that not every image will come out nicely. There may be problems with resolution or other. The FotoDesk application will alert you with a warning each time it may detect a possible deficiency in your picture.

Is there special pricing for volume orders?

Yes, we offer a special price of 24¢'s per print for 4x6 prints in quantities of 100 or more and 90¢'s per print for 5x7 prints in quantities of 100 or more. These prices apply only to the 3 day turnaround.

We can also offer volume pricing for other sizes on request and files could be brought to us or sent to our FTP site because of their larger size. Please see the FTP page for important information.

What should I do to prepare images?

Before you send images, COPY your images into a folder which can be named "To Print" (or any name). This folder could be on your desktop. When you use the application, it will be easier to find your images. Because the images are a copy, This folder can be deleted or saved to CD after you finish.

It is necessary that the image you upload should have a sufficient number of pixels and colors but not be too large either.

Number of pixels : This is generally called resolution. Ideally, in order to produce a satisfactory photographic print, your digital file should have at least a resolution of 1200 x 1800 pixels to make a 4x6 print at 300dpi. Less than this would produce lower quality prints. Files that are larger than this will be downsized and are therefore simply sending redundant data which won't be used and will only serve to slow down the process.

To make print of other sizes would be (at 300 dpi):

  • 5 x 7 = 1500 x 2100 pixels
  • 8 x 10 = 2400 x 3000 pixels
  • 8 x 12 = 2400 x 3600 pixels
  • 11 x 14 = 3300 x 4200 pixels
  • 12 x 18 = 3600 x 5400 pixels

Again, these are ideal sizes, files of lesser size will produce lower quality.

As for colour, the files should be in 24 bit RGB (8 bits per colour). Our 2901 printer works in sRGB colour space.

A word about aspect ratio: Remember that 35mm cameras have an aspect ratio of 3:2, which corresponds to a width of 3 for an height of 2. Some digital cameras preserve this familiar ratio.

With many digital cameras, the rectangle ratio is different : 5.5 to 4. This comes from the fact that computers are mostly screen dependent and most screens have this other ratio. This produces a difficulty when printing a computer based image to traditional photographic paper. Therefore, the FotoDesk application enables you to select cropping which is appropriate for you and a print without uneven borders.

Are images adjusted for colour and density when printed?

No, generally there no adjustments applied although this is at the discretion of the operator. If you want "No Corrections" to be applied, you can specify "No Corrections" in the comment area of your order.

At any time, it is possible to discuss your specific requirements with our technician.

What is a File Size Warning?

The FotoDesk application will warn you if you try to send an image that does not have enough resolution, still you will be able to bypass the warning and upload such an image, but the result will be a poor quality print in most of the cases.

If the green check is visible, the file meets the required size.

When the red line symbol is visible , this warns you that the file is not of adequate pixel count to make a satisfactory print.

Sizes are shown in inches , what are the approximate metric equivalent sizes?

  • 4 x 6 in = 10 x 15 cm
  • 5 x 7 = 12.7 x 17.8 cm
  • 8 x 10 = 20.3 x 25.4 cm
  • 8 x 12 = 20.3 x 30.5 cm
  • 11 x 14 = 27.8 x 35.5 cm
  • 12 x 18 = 30.5 x 45.7 cm

Is it possible to order prints in other sizes?

Yes, the price charged will be for the next size larger, for example:

  • 4 x 7 in = 5 x 7 in
  • 6 x 8 = 8 x 10
  • 9 x 12 = 11 x 14
  • 10 x 14 = 11 x 14
  • 12 x 16 = 12 x 18

We can also print smaller sizes, such as wallet size and business cards.

Note: Ideally, you should canvas your image to the larger size before sending, leaving a large white border. Price will be charged for the larger size selected. If you have questions or special requirements, please inquire.

What if I have other questions?

You can send an email to: fotodesk@gpclabworks.com. Or you can include your questions in the comment area with your order.

Can I print images from my cam-corder?

Yes, if your camcorder has a "Still Capture" mode and the same rules apply as for regular image files.

Can I print images from movie clips taken with my digital camera?

No, unfortunately the file format is wrong and the image size is inadequate to allow printing.

Can I print gray scale images (Black & White)?

Yes, the FotoDesk application enables printing a grayscale image. But when such an image is printed on traditional colour paper, it is extremely difficult to keep the grays without any color shift. In most of our attempts, even within the same lab, we always got prints that are not gray anymore, but had a shift in one of the basic colors, usually slightly magenta. It is not a pronounced shift but is noticeable.

What Print size and Print finishing options can I select?

The FotoDesk application let you select the number of prints, the size, the cropping and the finish in Matte or Glossy. You can select printing with or without border.

What is the average time needed to upload an image?

We hate to answer "it depends", but that has to be the answer.

Indeed, there are several issues here, starting with the connection speed you are using, and the size file you are sending and the quantity of images. If you have a very large quantity, it may be a good idea to break up the order in to two or more smaller orders to lessen the risk of a failure due to technical problems.

How can I receive my prints?

You can pick up your prints at our counter or you can have them mailed to you.

Note: The mailing cost shown is for an average order, up to 100 - 4 x 6 or 5 x 7 prints, in Canada. If you have a large order, the mailing cost will be adjusted according to Canada Post pricing for weight, carton size and destination, if outside Canada.

Can I send prints to my relatives and friends far away?

The FotoDesk application will allow you to enter a delivery address different from your own.

In this way you can send your prints wherever you wish. This could be used for sending family pictures to your relatives, or photos to a client or supplier.

Can I send images from far away?

You can send us images from anywhere that you can establish a stable internet connection.

Can I send images that were taken by a photographer?

Generally, if an image appears to be copyright protected, we will not print it until we have written authorization from the owner. Please see our copyright policy.

Can I send images that have been saved from the web?

This is not a good idea because images captured from the web may have other problems, such as viruses embedded in them.
